He actually has a barn and the cows stay in there all the time except when the helpers take them out to graze. They milk part out out for cheese then the calves get the rest. He offered me some warm milk but i wasn't too sure of that so I turned it down.
They make the cheese then sell it. I was a little glad he didn't offer us any cheese. I don't think I am ready for that. We did have lunch cooked on a fire and it was OK. Everything was hot so all the bugs should be dead. We will know better tonight.
Here is what real ranchers raise here. No they don't sell them for pets. Its what's for supper!
Elder y Hermana Johnson: We are so glad you are upholding the motto of all senior couples in Mision Cusco: "Every day is a new adventure". Yes, you do have to be careful of everything you eat or drink, even no matter how tasty it looks. We never would eat the freshly sliced pineapple from the street carts, because we never knew where the vendor's hands had been. We would get popcorn from the carts sometimes, and that was OK. We would buy "choclo", which is the boiled big-kernel corn ears that you get with a hunk of cheese, they will even buy a bus ticket, and get on board with a bucket of choclo and cheese to sell to the passengers. The meats and kabobs that the street vendors cook sure did smell good and look tasty, but we never did eat any of it - sometimes we were waiting to meet the missionaries where the vendors were cooking, and we saw the meat stored and handled in a not-very-sanitary way, plus the skewers got re-used without cleaning. All part of the adventure!
ReplyDeleteAren't you impressed with how clever and innovative the Peruvians are? They certainly have adapted to their circumstances, I think they are the ultimate survivors. They can make any tool out of rebar and old leaf springs from cars. When the rest of the world falls apart they will just ask: "what? did something happen?", and their lives will continue on uninterrupted.
Its so good to see your photos and comments. We wish you the best, and keep them coming!
